A tip that I learned recently for us (yes me too!) knitting newbies. When casting on hold your TWO knitting needles together and then cast on. When you are done casting on, carefully remove one of the needles and you will have the perfect tension for your cast on, not to tight and not to lose

i like that trick, i never thought of that before, took me a lot of practice to not cast on very tight :)
