I have crocheted for over 40 years and found it much easier to knit continental style (holding yarn in left hand).
If you are having trouble you might check it out and give it a try.

I was the same way, I finally ended up doing it the same way as Amy at knittinghelp.com and can purl fairly fast now.
Hang in There!!

Ack! Every time I try Continental my brain seizes up, nasty words come out of my mouth, my hands cramp and then I just have to laugh at my spastic attempts. I really don't get it because you'd think that a crocheter would do better with Continental. Every so often I give it another go and the results never vary. Bah!
My MIL & I had a "show me how you knit" session awhile back and I fully expected her to do Continental (being German) but nooooo she did something that was so convoluted and bizarre I couldn't even follow it. She tried my (English) method and proclaimed that she thought it would "be much faster if you had a lot of knitting to do.".
I've looked into Combination knitting (ala Annie Modesitt) but I've not had a chance to really try it out. |

I wish I could knit english style, I tried and tried, but my tension was terrible and it felt to awkward, because my left hand wanted to do more . . . . so I started out english, but settled into continental.
Lokking foward to crocheting and knitting with you here at crochemania!!

Heh, I do so wish I could get the Continental thing because it just makes more sense to my "crocheting trained" hands but noooo. I turn into a completely uncoordinated twit, funny to see.
So glad I discovered this forum. :D It'll keep me "honest" (meaning I hope that it'll keep in check my scatter-brained start-itis tendencies.
Then again, maybe not but I'm still glad I found it! |

Yes I teach people that crochet the Continental method and with me standing behind them and walking them thru it it usually works well for them. I can do it better now but am still a bit ackward since I have always knit the English method.
I have learned a lot of things the last couple yrs and hope to keep learning so I can help others learn and continue doing my gifts, donations and things. I could never do all I do if it weren't for my wonderful friends that give me yarn or one friend sent me a bunch of needles & two boxes of yarn. She can't knit any more.
I don't say no as I can use it or share it and with the class I teach (this is the second one.... well not much goes to waste for sure.
I had 4 baby blanket gifts to have done for 3 in Feb & 1 in Mar. So nice when people are happy with what I've made and really enjoy it. Later this yr I will make a couple throws to donate to the AmVets - they auction or raffle them and use the money to do things for the vets in the hospitals or whatever.
So glad to see you ladies joining us hope to see more of your posts soon...
