I usually buy from Walmart, Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, Michaels, and Hancock Fabrics. I have ordered fancy crochet thread from hhtatting and a specialty place in California, but only twice. Can't remember the name of it right now.
The local yarn stores have beautiful yarns, but I can't imagine paying so much for yarn. If I did the kind of crochet work that I would consider heirloom quality, that'd be different. I just do simple things, and so the acrylics, Woolease, the cottons for place mats, and the occasional Paton's Grace, will do.
I notice a huge difference in thread quality. The nicer threads are just much easier to work with.
Can't stand anything that splits a lot, whether it's yarn or thread.
How 'bout you?

ooppps sent some splitty yarn - sorry I thought it would make a pretty table runner or something. you can always pass it on to someone else.
I go to JoAnn's & check the sales now & then but mostly I get from wonderfully generous ladies like my sister Suzee, got a box from Thunderbird a while back, people around town that know me, the last was a garbage bag & a half from a lady I talked to in pogo games. She lives 2 hrs from me & her one niece brought it to me. Of course some yarn in the prize packs . It is allllll over this little apt but I love it. |

On a budget, so most of what I buy is from HL, Joanns or Michaels. I guess it really depends on what you are making for whom. I would love to frequent the higher end shops. But I can't afford it. I can not see spending $100 on a sweater that I have to make, when I can buy a sweater at a department store for half that. If we all had unlimited disposable incomes, then that would be a different story! I am learning to check yardage against price to determine the actual cost. It is a case by case basis.

I've also found things at thrift shops. I haven't bought anything in quite a while. Just using what I have.

The last yarn I bought was some I Love This \Cotton at HL. then I bought some sock yarn on our anniversary getaway. That's it for me the last couple of months. I'm like you, using what I have and selling some to reduce some of my stash.

I go to Walmart.Hobby Lobby, and Michaels. I sometimes order from Annie's Attic or one of those other places. I have expanded my looking since coming to this site and learning sooooo much from you ladies. I can somtimes find thread at Big Lots. I found the most beautiful cotton there last summer.
