I think Kathy and pheonixtears are the ones to help you be patient and they will see your post. A few years ago I did a baby afghan but I used double crochet stitches. Good luck!

I have never crocheted from a graph but I think Miss Kitty has.

I bought a graph of an angel ghan from etsy, it is a purple angel, and it is only two colors, white and purple, so I am going to give it a go...

You are going to changed the colors the same way.

Hey JoBug, Miss Kitty's links are very good.  The only thing I can add is to be sure and use a marking method of some sort so you know where you are on the chart.  I use one of those magnetic boards and use magnetic rulers to keep my place on each row.  But you can use a highlighter too.  But if you frog, then you have to change to another highlighter color! LOL! Charts are read from left to right on one row then change to right to left on the next row.(Or vice versa) I also count my squares ahead of time and write them down in pencil on the chart so I don't have to stop and count while I am crocheting.  As far as changing color just for the outline, you probably will have to cary that color all through the afghan.  There may be other instructions on those links though.  Hope this helps!

Thanks Miss Kitty, I found them links VERY helpful! I been practicing today on a potholder...I made a heart graph, and am working the heart in the middle in white, the rest is green...it is going okay, I just have to make my stitches tighter I think, because I can see the carry through when I started the white, I put a tail out and sc over it before I started with the white, and I can see it. I guess it is good to practice first!!
Thank you so much

When you do the green for the background, you should have 2 separate
pieces of green. One for the left side and one for the right side of the dis cloth. Then one white for the middle. You do not carry the yarn to the end of the rows.

One method is:
1. Place each ball of yarn in a zip-top sandwich bag. Zip it closed when color is not in use. Keep the yarn wound as close to the work as you can when that color is not in use.

Or:
2. Purchase yarn bobbins, made for the purpose of holding small amounts of yarn for multi-color work.

3. Take a clothespin and wrap some yarn around it and clip the yarn in the end to hold it when not in use.

4. Cut some bobbins out of cardboard.

Carrying the yarn over a few stitches is okay but you do not want to go over 4 sts.
