Hand, wrist pain

Does anyone ever get hand or wrist pain when you crochet alot? I have some gloves that are fingerless that are for like carpal tunel pain but just wonder if anyone has ever used any crochet hooks with special handles for this? If so does that help? Any suggestions or tips.

I use those gloves also. I am going to try an addi turbo crochet hook and I did try putting one of those cushioned crochet covers on my thread needles and that really worked well. I do not know how true this is but someone told me that people that hold their hooks like a pencil have much more stress on the hands than those that hold it like a knife (I am a knife holder). Have you ever tried putting a pillow in your lap so that your arms are supported a little ? Awhile back the breast feeding pillow called a boopee or ??? was sid to really help support your back and arms for crochet and knit. Hope this helps.

I hold my hook like a steak knife, and my wrist will start hurting if I crochet for extended periods of time.

I bought a set of Clover Soft Touch hooks, and that seems to help. If I use aluminum hooks my fingers will hurt. I can't remember the last time I used one of those. I love to use wood or plastic hooks - it's the only kind I'll use anymore.

I've not tried the fingerless gloves yet.

I hold mine like a steak knife as well and do find my hand starts to hurt after a long stretch. I've often wondered if those gloves work. I do also have to say that I agree with Tara 100% about the metal vs 'other' hooks.

A friend bought me a complete set of Clover Soft hooks and I absolutely love them. I also really love wooden hooks. I've had a couple of Jimbo hooks...my all time favorite...but my wonderful little dog chewed them up on me....I was heartbroken!!

I have a plastic hook but don't really like it. As far as the metal hooks....I only it when I have no choice!!

Thanks gals for the great responses. Yes I am a steak knife holder too. I found a set of the clover hooks on ebay for 30 bucks which is really good. There are 8 hooks at at stores I searched they were like 6 bucks a piece. I will have to wait may be I can have them for my birthday. Hugs and thanks again:)
LOL CroQwn I love the pillow idea but my dog don't lol.

I have Tendonitis a thumb spica injury and ankylosing spondylitis in the neck and shoulders and tennis elbow,so i live with pain and some days are just a different degree. I manage my pain with accupuncture and strong painkilling meds and rubs, heat packs and when i have to support with a pillow at times all of course on an as needed basis. Rarely am i pain free I hold my hook like a pencil for normal crochet and like a knife for Tunisian. Each gives me pain in specific areas. The knife hold i get pain in the forearm and elbow, the pencil hold in the thumb and wrist. So i do what i can while i can and try not to let myself over crochet in any one style. I find its a matter of knowing your limits and stop before you get to sore.In my case if i over do it i can't crochet for weeks and that drives me nuts (well more than usual anyway LOL! )

I use the gloves when the pain starts..
I found that if I change off between crochet and knitting I'm better off then just doing one...

i hold mine like a knife and i find that i have alot less stress than holding it like a pencil, plus when i hold it like a knife i can actually gt some work done. i hate holding it like a pencil it really hurts me alot, i hope ya all get some relief from the pain, i agree with jacqui, know your limits and only crochet till it starts hurting , then stop just my 2 cents

My wrist does the same thing. I have started taking breaks every thirty minutes or so, and I also change projects. I find that if I switch between thread and yarn that my wrist doesn't hurt so much. Plus I don't get bored.
