Question for all you designers out thereI wanted to ask all you designers out there how in the world do you come up with something original? Is it a process where you know what you want and you make it happen or just a happy "accident"? Is there a way to verify it that it's original and that someone didn't come up with it before you did? I am really interested. I would love to say I made something original of my own patterns but not sure where to start. Thanks:)

Me is here..again, LOL.
Brown out got my power supply...........new power supply on board
and up and running again.
This time I am ill with the electric company, they did in my battery backup surge protector too.
They are gonna reimburse me, you just watch.
When I design something, I do both. Sometimes I just pic up my hook and go at it. I see things as I go. I will always see something else that I can make next from something in what I am in the process of making.
Other times, I set out to design a certain thing and go for it.
I am a good one too at redoing it a lot (frog) til I have it completed.

Doing the happy dance that you are up and running again:) We missed you!
Thanks for the info on designing. I will have to try my hand at it and see if I can come up with anything. LOL there are so many great patterns already and I feel like I am in a candy shop but I imagine there is a great deal of happiness when you make something all of your very own.

My inspiration comes from various places.
Sometimes I will need something other times it will just hit me.
As far as original... wish I could help you, that is one question that has kept me from designing as much.
The fear of accidentally copying.

Every now and then I'll see something and a lightbulb will go off. There are times when I've sit and had brainstorming session....my kids are the coolest though.
I'll say, "I want to make something like......" and they'll start spouting off ideas until (usually) someone says something that is just right.
I usually end up seeking out my crochet buddies for help on how to do something.....right Kat?? lol
Good luck though, and don't be afraid........my biggest advice.
(Kathy is likely going to read this and laugh....the 'don't be afraid' part because I always am.....lol)

That's the key........ "don't be afraid"
If you can do the crochet sts, then let them work for you..............
make them work for you.
Yeah Lisa, I remember when you and I sat together online and designed a walnut

Hi...PhoenixTears62
Designing something to me is an extension of ones self... LOL Gezzzz where did that come from? WOW
No no no! Do you ever see something and say to yourself, "Self! I bet that would be cute for a baby gift"... And for the next 3 weeks that’s all you can think about... so next time you do that... sit with yarn, wire and or thread and of course a hook and you will design something all yours.
The bracelets I make started out as leather cord and beads. I would sc beads on to the leather cord, leave a little extra on both ends so it could be tied (kind of like a friendship bracelet) Poof! Finished... They were a hit... with the girls I worked with. But something was missing... A few weeks later, I was working with wire and magnets... making bracelets without a clasp. Using the magnets and wrapping the crochet wire beaded strand around your wrist. I really thought I had something! Well, come to find out... someone beat me to it... a lady was selling them about 2 miles from me... lol
Back to the drawing board. Then... Bam... I was messing around with the beaded crochet wire strands... I had 3 different colored strands in my hand. I Got It! WOW.... Braided the strands and made a bracelet.... next thing my husband walks in and we start chatting about them... He smiles and says "Honey they look like Braidlets! Braided Bracelets".
Man I'll tell you my mind was on over time... got on the net and for months I searched all around for this style... and No where to be found. Next I trademarked the name and copyright the design... Whew! That was about a year ago... And it's only been in the past few months I finally have what I want...
Wow I think I wrote a book! LOL Now what was the question? LOL
Kathy is right... That's the key........ "Don’t be afraid"
Trust me ... it will come to you when you least expect it. Ok well ... I think it's time for me to stop typing! LOL hope I didn’t carry on to much... Although I love to talk about myself! NOT! lol
Have a great day!

I have designed a handful of things... I really don't know where the ideas come from. The Lunatic Fringe scarf I did was the weirdest. I was just sitting in the dining room one day, and started doing it. I (this is going to sound weird) always get good ideas when I'm depressed. Every single time I have come up with a design, I was really depressed at the time... But, that's probably just me.
I think original designs (IMO) are something you come up with on your own, not a take-off of someone else's ideas, or anything.
