I have never tried tunisian crocheting. Has anyone ever tried this stitch and does it really look like knitting?

I have done some tunisian crochet. It is slow work
for me, slower than regular stitching! It is easy,
very repetitive. I have a couple of
leaflets on it and I have an afghan I have been
working on for a long while, but am not driven to
finish cause you have to sew those squares together!
Then, the pattern has cross stitchon top of that!
It does look more like knit.

I did a pillow in regular tunisian.
I thought it went fast, or at least the same, for me.
The back side of the fabric looks knitted.
I guess you could use that side if you wanted. I thought about it.
I never cross stitched it, I worked the colors as I went.
I tried cross stitching on crochet once, hate it.
Won't ever do it again. LOL

Oh and I made a fulled purse using tunisian as the base.
Turned out great.

I have done several projects with tunisian and if you use the knit stitch it does look like knitting (with knitting needles). The only difference is that it produces a much thicker fabric than knitting does, so you need to use a larger hook than you normally would for the size of yarn. Normally you would use a G or H hook with worsted weight yarn, to get a nice pliable fabric with tunisian you need a J or K or larger (it will still be thicker than a knitted fabric though). Because of the tightness of the fabric though, moving to a larger hook, does not produce a overly holey fabric.

I don't have very many patterns, but usually just wing it on my own, using a combination of crochet and knitting techniques. It can go slow depending on the size hook you use and I find it hard to find supplies. But if you can find what you want and you use the larger hooks, it can go really fast and is less stressful on the wrist than crocheting (less wrist movement).

You start with afghan stitch right?
if yes, the aghan stitch is so slow for me I'd rather do single crochet then that!!!!!
Took me about 5 months to do this in afghan stitch..

Though it is over 6ft. long.

I have done heaps of afghans and couch throws in Tunisian knit stitch an always found it very fast. But you must use a thick hook so mine were done with no smaller than a 7mm hook .There is a group you can join on the net with lots of info.Tunisiancrochet is what its called ok.

You put as many stitches as you can on your hook and change colors randomly you get a lovely patchwork effect without sewing squares together. If you start your next color 3 stitches inside, or over the next color it makes it more effective. When you have the length you want you edge it anyway you like.Have fun.

You shouldn't feel intimidated by any crochet, if you would look at it like an adventure. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes or have little accidents on the way because thats how we learn. Think about it if we didn't ever try we wouldn't learn anything and every one has to be a beginner at something. I have always decided i want to do a project and figured out how best to achieve it as i go. Ihave never worried about "if i am a beginner i should only do easy things" as to me that is boring. So come on and give something a go even if you are afraid you will fail ,because you will certainly have an adventure and learn heaps along the wayand you will never be bored or boring!

I haven't tried it yet but there is a bag I want to try using this method. It's in the April/May 07 Crochet Today. I will let you know if I get it done:)
