Hey all, I am in a bad way here this week! Before the
ladies campout I started breaking out with poison ivy. I
imagine one of the cats brought in on their coats. So,
my belly and right armpit, breast is covered up. On my arms,
neck, eyebrow. So, I was a little uncomfortable on the
trip. Then, I get back Sun. not feeling too well. It
was freaking cold Sunday morning breaking up camp.
Monday, I wake up with a fever and congestion. I am
still sick! But, one bright point is the poison ivy isn't
spreading anymore and it is drying up. But, what a
pain!
Well, enough whining for the day! I gotta go back to bed,
ahhh chooo! grumble grumble....

While i certainly hope you feel better soon can i ask a silly question? Being from Oz we don't have poison Ivy here, how does it come in on your cats? Does it have little hairs that stick to them and irritate you? I can't say i understand ,i have seen pics of it but don't know how it works. We have a Stinging tree in our Rainforests here where if you brush against it or a leaf falls on you millions of tiny hairs with some kind of toxin irritate and cause great pain. We were warned and shown it as kids as we used to wander in some Rainforest where i grew up. But its not something that just pops up in your garden as i have read poison Ivy can. Can you explain please.

We're all coming down with something
in my house..........argh, the fun times are here!
jacqui, the plant has some kind of oil that rubs off onto what
ever brushes up against it or handles it. Like the cat
probably went thru some in the yard. Then, since the oil is
pretty hard to break down, the cat then transfers it to me
by touch or like laying on my pillow. The oil irritates your
skin and little blister like things pop up and itch like crazy.
If you scratch it, it oozes and spreads and itches like crazy
til all you think about is it is making it stop! I take an
antihistamine like Benadryl, and use a topical ointment
to dry it up and ease the itch. I also shower with a
special anti poison ivy soap which is supposed to break down
the oils. It is no fun. I have had it so bad I had to get a
cortisone shot, and then get the 10 day cortisone pill
treatment. My DH is not susceptible to it, nor either one of
my kids. I'm just lucky, I guess!LOL!!!

Thanks for the info darl i just got a poisons book out of the library and it said that its the oil as well. Wow you poor thing it seems 7 out of 10 Americans have a reaction to this oil and poison Ivy is related to the Sumac plant so there are a few with this nasty oil in them. It says there is a cream called bentoquatam that can provide a barrier but not if a rash is already present. I suppose if you were gardening it would help. It didn't say if animals such as your cat are affected to though so are they? Its quite interesting to read about. We have an introduced tree here called the Rhus tree and from what i have been reading in this book it seems its related, so this is why people here have violent reactions to it. I knew it was poisonous but not why till now, its strange no one has mentioned the connection to the American poison Oak/Ivy. The only mention of it was on a TV gardening show a long time ago. Perhaps its because its not so common and is an introduced species here. Hope you are feeling better now .
