I don't use South Maid or the other economy brands of thread any more; have found there really is a difference in quality (not just the appearance of the thread but the tendency to want to split, etc.). I guess my favorite is still Cebelia. It is worth the extra cost. It works up nice and has such an attractive sheen to it. I also like Opera but have found the quality is not uniform. I just made a beaded doily with it, and it did turn out nice but I had trouble with the thread wanting to split or shred. I also like Aunt Lydia's and Knit-Cro-Sheen, and they come in very pretty colors. I also did just make a doily with Royale but would NOT use it again. A thread I have just tried for the first time and fallen in love with is Clea. It is not as easy to find, but there is a seller on eBay in Paraguay (of all places) who sells it at great prices for FREE shipping. It has 1,000 yards per ball, but it does NOT take up any more room than a 400 yard ball of Aunt Lydia's, since they don't use the big cardboard roll in the middle. It is very smooth and SOFT, works up beautifully and comes in gorgeous colors. It could still replace Cebelia as my favorite! I really love Clea!
As for thickness, I definitely prefer #10. I can and have used #20, but anything thinner than that is too cumbersome for me to work with, and the thicker stuff is OK for beginners but I don't like the way it works up in stuff like doilies that is supposed to look lacy. What about the rest of you? Hugs, T

I use Cebelia for most of my thread work. Do you have a link for the Clea thread?

I go by the colors I want and have used Southmaid in certain colors. I have tried Cebelia and like it a lot.

TX Crochet Lover - The store of the eBay seller that offers Clea in many colors with FREE shipping is http://stores.ebay.com/Paraguay-Hilos - they sell other items besides Clea, so when you get to that page, put Clea in the search box. They have 49 Clea auctions at the moment (including a few Buy It Now). I highly recommend this thread and love the compact 1,000 yard size of the spools, and this seller ships promptly. Let us know how you like it if you try it! Teri
