After I crochet a while my hand and thumb and first 2-3 fingers start feeling sore and the fingers start to go numb.  I do wear a handeez glove on my right hand and that helps some and I do take breaks to stretch my hand but I was wondering if anyone has a similar problem and what you do about it so that you can continue to crochet?  Or is there something that you do to prevent this problem?

Thanks
Pam

When you begin crocheting just remember to learn to relax your hands/fingers, just let it flow loosely.

The biggest mistake we do as beginners is to hold everything to tightly.
I am so glad that when I was learning to crochet, the instructions I had for learning, it was the very first thing that was taught. Hold yarn and hook loosely and comfortably in your hands, then proceed the same, never let it get past relaxed. If you notice that you are holding the hook or the yarn a little tight, just stop, relax the hold, and begin again.

It was the best lesson taught me at the beginning for me, it has made all my work a joy to do. I never get aches or pains in my hands and I have crocheted for over 30 years.

I do want to note that only when I do nylon netting scrubbies, or when I work with multiple strands of yarns, at times to get the aches in my hands. I have found that I will tend to hold tighter than I should, the nylon and the multiple strands. It is true that tighter will make your hands/wrist and even on into the upper right arm (if you are right handed) ache.

Just practise (don't let yourself learn to crochet tight) holding loosely and comfortably the yarn and the hook, you will be ever so glad you learned it that way in the years to come, and your work will be evenly tentioned and it will look neat and well made.

Thanks so much!  I'll try to loosen up.  I would hate to have to give up needlework because of repetitive injury.

My wrist and fingers start to hurt when I crochet ,too.
That's why I switch from crochet to knit.. When my hand starts to hurt, on to the knitting. When It start to feel better back to the crocheting..

I talked to our physical therapist one time when I had one of the boys in there for something.  He showed me some stretches to do with my hands.  He said that I needed to keep the blood flowing and keep my hands limber. I'm not real good at doing these regularly, but when my hands or arms start to hurt or get tired, I do them.
