I'm making the bucket bag from Lion Brand's '5 Crochet Bag Designs' leaflet. In the directions there are instructions for a 'WELT' i've got no clue what this is!!!! I'm modifying the bag, by moving the pocket that's supposed to be on the inside to the outside. I've made this bag before and just skipped the welt section, but it's driving me nuts not knowing what in heck that is!
Thanks for any help!

Hmmm, you got me!
I'm hoping someone does know the answer to this. I'm curious now. |

It's hard to say exactly without the directions.
However this is what m-w.com/dictionary has to say:
1 : a strip between a shoe sole and upper through
which they are stitched or stapled together
2 : a doubled edge, strip, insert, or seam (as on a garment)
for ornament or reinforcement
Maybe that can help you figure it out. :) |

| A welt is a raised area usually along an edge of something. It is usually narrow and sometimes filled with a cord of some kind and then covered. |

| it's most likely some sort of reinforcement, however it's done almost at the top of the bag....the instructions say to chain 12 then skip 12 sts on prev rnd then it gets convoluded as to which stitches you're supposed to work into. either way, i've skipped that part and have modified the bag from the original pattern. if anyone has the leaflet or can get their hands on it, i'd love input. the directions for just that row are forever long, then there's a whole section about dealing with the welt. i'll be sure to post a photo of the finished bag with arrows and notes as to where the instructions said to put the welt.....OMG! i just looked at the photo of the bag with a photographer's loop (it's a magnifier) and there's a flap on outside of the bag. the pocket is on the inside with a flap on the outside to get to it...the welt would be the opening for the pocket. GEBUS!! i feel like a dolt! however, in my defense, this is a small photo! |
