I use a sm or large index card esp for the easy .... with the patt rows on it & one row on ea line then use a large paper clip on the side as a marker ... easy & fast to slide down to the next row and back up again to start the next patt set ( set of rows = 1 patt to repeat)
a lot of my knitting I use a steno book put the pattern (completely ) in the steno book but one row per line & use the paper clip that way its easy to carry if afraid of clip moving & messing me up when taking it with me I make a note of the row on a pc of paper or use back pg of steno books for notes like this or back of index card just a row #....
Any one else have ways they keep on track (or try to) besides a knitting counter.

I don't knit very much (just learning) but that sounds like a very good way to keep up with your rows.
